Bruxism - What is it?

If you've read this far, then you probably know what Bruxism is.  You may even be a sufferer, or, in my wife's opinion, a fate much worse than being a sufferer, you may be living with a sufferer!

Teeth Guard Smile 2
The dictionary definition of Bruxism is:

Main Entry: brux·ism
Pronunciation: bruk'siz'?m
Function: noun
Etymology: irregular from Greek brychein to gnash the teeth + English -ism
Date: 1932: Habitual, involuntary teeth grinding or teeth clenching, usually during sleep, as from anger, tension, fear, or frustration.

Bruxism is habitual teeth grinding or teeth clenching. The behaviour is generally not done consciously and occurs most often during sleep and less commonly during the day. It is usually associated with periods of stress or anger in the patient's life.

A survey of the condition has revealed that approximately one in four adults experience it. However most people don't realise they are a bruxer until after their teeth have been damaged
Sufferers of Bruxism may demonstrate some of the following symptoms:

  •    Abraded teeth
  •    Facial pain
  •    Oversensitive teeth
  •    Tense facial and jaw muscles
  •    Headaches
  •    Dislocation of the jaw
  •    Damage to the tooth enamel, exposing the inside of the tooth (dentin)
  •    A popping or clicking in the temporomandibular joint (TMJ)
  •    Tongue indentations
  •    Damage to the inside of the cheek

What causes Bruxism?
Although this habit is unintentional, dental health specialists often point to excessive stress and certain personality types as typical causes of bruxing. People who are anxious, angry or stressed are more likely to succumb to habitual teeth grinding and teeth clenching. Another cause of bruxism is an abnormal dental occlusion, where the upper and lower teeth don't fit together properly, which can cause the teeth to grind more easily due to their positioning.

Are there any Treatments?
There are a number of recognised treatments to relieve the symptoms of teeth grinding and eventually cure the condition.
Some of these treatments will be available from mainstream medical practitioners whist others you will find via your alternative therapist. See bruxism resources for technical information.

Teeth Guard or Night Guard

This can go under many names, teeth guard, grinding guard, night guard etc,  and is a custom fitted plastic mouth appliance which is worn at night to absorb the force of biting. Although the teeth clenching and teeth grinding will continue, the teeth wear away the plastic instead of each other. It is also believed that a teeth guard could help alter a patient's teeth grinding behaviour.

Management techniques
Stress management and relaxation techniques, such as hypnosis or the use of specific exercise routines, may be useful in breaking the habit of jaw clenching and teeth grinding.
Acupuncture may relieve the jaw tension associated with both bruxism and TMJ.

Massage therapy and deep tissue realignment, including Rolfing, can also assist in releasing the clenching pattern.

Herbal Tinctures
Anti-spasmodic herbal preparations, which also contain central nervous system relaxant properties, such as chamomile, may be prescribed before bed to prevent grinding while asleep.

Bio-feedback
Biofeedback, which teaches an individual to control muscle tension and any associated pain through thought and visualization techniques, is also a successful treatment option for bruxism. In biofeedback treatments, sensors placed on the surface of the jaw are connected to a special machine that allows the patient and healthcare professional to monitor a visual and/or audible readout of the level of tension in the jaw muscles.

Through relaxation and visualization exercises, the patient learns to relieve the tension and can actually see or hear the results of their efforts instantly through the sensor readout on the biofeedback equipment. Once the technique is learned and the patient is able to recognize and differentiate between the feelings of muscle tension and muscle relaxation, the biofeedback equipment itself is no longer needed and the patient has a powerful, portable, and self-administered treatment tool to deal with pain and tension.

"Save your Smile, Stop Grinding"

The 'Save Your Smile, Stop Grinding' course is by far the most popular Bruxism system available. It is a complete step-by-step program which will teach you exactly how to get rid of you teeth grinding and teeth clenching problem and finally be able to sleep without first inserting a teeth guard.

The course introduces you to some simple lifestyle changes (and they are very simple changes) and eases you into a daily exercise routine.  Don't worry though, the routine isn't a heavy workout plan and will only take you 2-minutes to complete.

The 'Save Your Smile, Stop Grinding' guide shows you how to best relax the muscles in you neck and head, essential to end teeth grinding. It then goes on to teach you the best positions to sleep in and demonstrates in depth the most effective exercises for loosening muscles.

The guide then talks about the potential that herbal remedies can play in your quest to stop teeth grinding and reveals three important supplements, which increase the effectiveness of the program dramatically.

Let's have a quick look at what their website says;

'Your teeth are precious and, when they're gone, that's it. They're not going to grow back. You'll spend the rest of your days in the dentist's chair, spending thousands of dollars to fix problems that could be solved right now…today.

There is no better time to get started with my program!

The sooner you start, the more likely you are to keep your teeth from grinding flat. Even if you wear a night guard, I'm sorry to tell you that you are still doing damage to your jaw.'

So would I recommend the 'Save Your Smile, Stop Grinding' guide? Well, yes I would.  It is an easy to read resource that will get rid of your Bruxism. The simple exercises and changes it suggests to your lifestyle will take you less than 7-minutes a day, that's not much of a sacrifice to make when you consider that you will be able to throw away your teeth guard forever!

Bruxism Help Program / Teeth Grinding Help Program

As Katherine Page, the author of 'The Bruxism Help Program' says, "It's not an over the counter drug, something from a herbalist, not some New Age treatment. It's not magic or Voodoo."... So what is it?

Before I go into that, let me tell you a little bit about Katherine and how she came to write this guide.

As a long-term severe Bruxism sufferer, which had recently deteriorated into TMJ, she was devastated to be told by her consultants that there was no permanent cure for her condition.

Rather than accept this prognosis, she and her husband, George set out on a quest which would cost them many thousands of dollars and eat up years from their lives.  Luckily for us, the quest was successful; in fact it was more successful than Katherine could have hoped.

The results were two fold. The first was that Katherine was completely cured of her Bruxism. No more teeth grinding, no more clenching and definitely no more teeth guard.

The second was that Katherine had, over those years of trial and error, developed and tested a genuine cure for Bruxism.

So just what is the Bruxism Help Program?

It is a completely holistic approach to curing Bruxism and, similar to other teeth grinding programs is a structured combination of exercise, diet and massage.

Unlike other guides though, the Bruxism Help Program comes in at over 70 information packed pages, and those pages are written in plain and simple English, and illustrated throughout with photographs.

Katherine discusses foods which should be avoided at all costs together with 50 foods which can quickly soothe pain.

She shows in detail the 32 most important exercises to start right away, then goes on to talk about the need to eliminate temporary pharmaceutical relief and praises a surprising nutrient, which can instantly relieve pain.

Finally there are sections on specific breathing techniques to stop headaches and using exercise to 'empower your jaw and tongue'! Which sounds silly, but is actually really useful.

All in all, this is a very well written, lead-you-by-the-hand, manual which has been employed by 1000's of Bruxers to cure their condition.

Katherine has been sharing this approach to curing Bruxism for over 7 years and is so confident in it that she promises if you are not completely cured, then the guide will be completely free.

Note: The Bruxism Help Program and The Teeth Grinding Help Program are the same product marketed under different titles. I have marked this down slightly because it causes confusion.

No More Teeth Guard

..............................................................................................................
Do you sometimes feel like you're destined to spend the rest of your life forced to use a teeth guard?
Do you grind teeth when you're asleep? What about when you're awake?
Do you wish there was a way to throw away your grinding guard forever and permenantly stop teeth grinding?

Ok. Enough of the sales lingo. But I'm sure that you've read stuff like this before and wondered if there is any truth behind all of the miracle cure products on the market, or if it's all just snake oil.

Hopefully, the reviews on No More Teeth Guard can help you decide if any of the products which claim to stop teeth grinding and allow you to ditch your teeth guard are right for you.
"TMJ No More - 3 Step System"

I steered clear of buying a copy of TMJ No More for a long time, after all, the whole point of No More Teeth Guard is to help Bruxers find a solution to the disease before it has a chance to develop into TMJ. Then I got an e-mail from a lady in London called Jean, she had only good things to say about the program and questioned why I hadn't reviewed it. So I headed over to the website, read the sales pitch and bought a copy.

The first thing that struck me after I downloaded the program was the size.  It weighs in at a hefty 192 pages, so I was fully expecting it to be padded out and have very little substance. I was wrong! There is, I admit, a bit a fluffing, but I quickly forgave that as the quantity, and more importantly the quality of the information contained in its pages became apparent.

The second thing that makes TMJ No More stand out from the crowd, and this is something I have NEVER seen offered before, is three months free personal, one-to-one counseling with the programs creator, nutritionist and lifelong medical researcher, Sandra Carter.  She promises; "If at any time you feel confused, you can have your troublesome questions privately answered. I promise you'll get an answer in 24 hours."

While on the face of it, it may seem that Sandra is setting herself up to be forever slaving over her keyboard answering questions, the truth of it is that TMJ No More is such a well written product and the instructions and diagrams are so clear and easy to follow, that I'm sure Sandra will hardly have any e-mails to answer at all.

So, what's inside the package?

The book starts in a similar way to other products, with an explanation of why Sandra decided to put pen to paper and write the guide.  Then she sets the scene and explains how the book is organized and how to get the most out of it.  She follows this with 4 well written chapters all split into easily manageable, bite size sections, in which she tells you exactly how to cure your Bruxism and TMJ.  She shows you the three steps you need to take and then guides you through each of those steps with precise instructions and detailed pictures.  There are sections discussing the best diet for you to follow, how to eliminate harmful habits, how to identify trigger points, related illnesses and how your Bruxism could develop into other conditions, alternate therapies, etc, etc.

I could go on and on, telling you what is in this book for you, it really is that good. But I won't.  Instead I'll condense this review into two simple but vital questions...

Is TMJ No More relevant to Bruxism sufferers and does it show you how to cure your teeth grinding?

Well, I have to agree with, Jean from London. TMJ No more is a fantastic program, it delivers everything it promises and a lot more besides.  Added to that, and what really makes this program stand out from the crowd, is the personal, one-on-one mentoring available from the programs creator, Sandra Carter. When you decide to end your Bruxism forever, then this is the program that will help you do it.
